About Philip Kemp

Philip Kemp, MBACP (Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), is a qualified humanistic counsellor and psychotherapist who works from a humanistic, person-centred viewpoint while drawing on a range of complementary practices.

Philip supports people experiencing low mood, anxiety, questions about self-worth, and feelings of isolation even when social connections exist. These internal struggles are presented as common aspects of human life, and Philip frames them as experiences many people face rather than failings to be judged.

Philip’s work rests on a belief in human resilience - the idea that individuals often possess more inner strength than they realise. With the presence of a supportive other, such as a counsellor or psychotherapist, that resilience can be discovered and strengthened. Philip aims to offer a warm, non-judgmental yet appropriately challenging space where clients can explore whatever they bring to sessions and where personal nature of sessions is maintained.

Although grounded in a person-centred approach, Philip integrates creative techniques and elements from cognitive behavioural practice, including positive affirmations, as well as gestalt exercises and existential perspectives. Regular clinical supervision and ongoing professional development form part of the practice to ensure ethical and thoughtful care. Video and telephone sessions are available.

Philip began training in statutory and third-sector settings, gaining counselling hours with The Outhouse (formerly Outhouse East), an LGBTQ+ charity, and with the probation service (Essex CRC). Philip currently works as a counsellor for HBBS Counselling and runs a private practice called Black Sheep Counselling & Psychotherapy from a home base in Brentwood.

Over the course of practice, Philip has supported people with depression, bereavement, suicidal ideation, domestic violence, racial identity concerns, and a range of LGBTQ+ issues including questions of gender identity, gender expression, and sexuality.

Could remote therapy fit your needs?

Many people wonder whether meeting with a therapist remotely can make a real difference. For many common concerns - including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and navigating life transitions - online therapy has been shown to offer outcomes comparable to traditional in-person work.

One of the main benefits of online sessions is flexibility. People can choose the contact method that suits them best - video calls, phone sessions, live chat, or in-app messaging - making it easier to fit therapy into a busy or changing schedule.

Therapists offering remote sessions are licensed professionals, and clients may switch to another therapist at any time if a different fit is needed. For many, remote therapy provides an accessible, practical way to engage in regular therapeutic work without losing the core elements of a professional therapeutic relationship.
